Celebrating Switzerland Through 2,110 Municipal Flags
Every year on 1 August, Switzerland celebrates its National Day, commemorating the alliance traditionally dated to 1291 that laid the foundations of the Swiss Confederation.
More than seven centuries later, Switzerland has grown into a nation of 26 cantons and 2,110 municipalities (as of the beginning of 2026). Each municipality has its own history, traditions, and identity, often proudly reflected in its unique flag.
A Nation Built on Compromise
How do more than two thousand municipalities—and millions of people speaking four national languages—agree on the future of their country?
The answer is that they often don't agree at first.
Instead, Switzerland has built a political culture around discussion, negotiation, and compromise. Through its system of direct democracy, citizens regularly vote in referendums and popular initiatives on issues that shape the country's future. Decisions are not simply made for the people—they are made by the people.
This commitment to dialogue and consensus has become one of Switzerland's defining characteristics. While opinions naturally differ, the process encourages listening, collaboration, and finding common ground. It is a tradition that has helped create one of the world's most stable and prosperous democracies.
Creating the Mosaic
To celebrate this remarkable heritage, I created a photo mosaic of the Swiss flag using the flags of every one of Switzerland's 2,110 municipalities, together with the flags of the 26 cantons.
Each individual flag contributes a small part to the larger image, just as every municipality contributes to the character and strength of the Confederation.
Every Flag Tells a Story
Collecting and assembling the flags was a fascinating project in itself.
I was struck by the incredible diversity of designs. Some flags feature animals, castles, mountains, rivers, keys, stars, or crosses. Others draw on centuries-old heraldic traditions, while many tell the unique story of the community they represent.
Together they form a colourful tapestry of local history, culture, and identity.
Looking closely at the mosaic reveals hundreds of these distinctive designs. Every flag is recognisable, yet together they create something far greater than the sum of their parts.
Seeing the Big Picture
What I find particularly fitting is that, when viewed from a distance, thousands of individual flags merge into a single Swiss flag.
It is a simple visual reminder that unity does not require uniformity.
Switzerland's strength has always come from bringing together diverse communities, languages, cultures, and perspectives while respecting the individuality of each.
Perhaps that is the country's greatest achievement—not that everyone always agrees, but that disagreement is channelled into discussion, compromise, and ultimately, collective decisions.
